چکیده

The utilization of sewage in agriculture has lately been receiving increasing attention in many countries. The question is especially important in a country with limited water resources like Israel where insufficient rainfall must be supplemented by irrigation. In order to evaluate the public health hazard involved, it is necessary, among other things, to obtain information on the survival of enteric organisms in the soil. This subject has been reviewed extensively and summarized by Rudolfs et al. (1950). The purpose of the present investigation, which was started early in 1951, is to study the survival of enteric bacteria in the soil under the field conditions obtained in Israel. The climate is characterized by long, hot, and dry summers and resembles that of the San Joachim Valley in California.

Inland wetlands mapping and vulnerability assessment using an integrated geographic information system and remote sensing techniques

The understanding of inland wetlands’ distribution and their level of vulnerability is important to enhance management and conservation efforts. The aim of the study was to map inland wetlands and assess their distribution pattern and vulnerability to natural and human disturbances such as climate change (temperature increase) and human activities by the year 2080. Inland wetland types i.e. for...

Comparative survival of indicator bacteria and enteric pathogens in well water.

The comparative survival of various fecal indicator bacteria and enteric pathogens was studied in a stable well water supply by using membrane chambers. There was more variation in the 29 coliform cultures and they died more rapidly, as a group, than the 20 enterococcus cultures that were examined. The comparative survival of the organisms tested follows: Aeromonas sp. > the shigellae (Shigella...

Salmonella suppression by known populations of bacteria in flies.

Survivorship of Salmonella typhimurium, Streptococcus faecalis, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was studied in dibiotic and tribiotic interactions in vitro and in various regions of the digestive tract of the blow fly, Calliphora vicina. In dibiotic interactions, Salmonella typhimurium dominated Streptococcus faecalis and was dominated by P. mirabilis, but in neither case was it e...
